A Comfortable Bra?

Today I found an amazing new feature of a product I use almost every day...

Cushioned underwire in bras! I couldn't try one on unfortunately because neither La Senza location in the mall had my size, but when I ran my finger along cushioning, I gasped.

Imagine, Ashley! No more digging!

But I know what you're going to say:
"But Ashley -- YOU are promoting La Senza? Doesn't that contradict your feminist values against sex being used sell everything and women being pressured to titillate men?" (Look through a La Senza flyer or walk through the store and you'll know what I mean.)

Well, yes. It does. I do feel uncomfortable shopping at lingerie stories partly, I recently realized, because I feel this pressure and also because I'm kind of anti-bra. Yes, bras give support, but they're also designed to alter the appearance of breasts to conform to a socialized ideal of what beauty and sexiness are. And I feel like I buy into this every time I go into a lingerie store or department. I don't just wear bras for the support; I wear them because I like how they make me look.

But today I won't be such a hypocrite and I will celebrate the cushioned underwire, just as I think most women who wear bras with underwire will. But I have a deeper reason to celebrate.

My shunt, the tube that runs from my brain to my abdomen, is right underneath the skin. As it runs between my breasts, underwire tends to chafe and dig into it. It is sometimes pretty uncomfortable, especially when I'm extra sensitive to the shunt or its hurting me.

I can't wait to get a cushioned underwire bra -- I won't have to deal with the discomfort so much anymore. So thank you, La Senza. Now, if you just carry my bra size in stock and calm down the hyper-sexualization, maybe we can be friends.

Note: I will delete any comments from people asking to see the cushioned underwire bra on me or guessing my bra size.

  1. I have a similar problem because my spine's deformed so my ribs stick out on one side. The underwire hurts like crazy on my 'tired' days. I might just take a look in LaSenza to see if they have them here. Hang the politics - if I can be comfortable for once!

  2. Gosh, I tried on a bra at Nordstroms years ago and it was so incredibly comfortable (I had just had a bra fitting by one of their "experts") but the price was $58 and I just couldn't bring myself to purchase it. Do you know I still think about that bra and I forgot to write down the brand name.
